    When getting started in the vending machine business there are a few things that one should do even before buying their first vending machine.

    If you just run out and buy a machine right away with out doing any homework first then you may be setting yourself up for disaster.

    Disaster happens when you over spend, set up the wrong machine at the wrong location and fail to recoup your investment in a reasonable time frame. Even worse you could wind up way over spending on you machines and never get them on location to make you any money.

    So lets talk today about some of the things that you can get started doing when researching your vending business opportunity.

    First you will want to start reading everything that you can about this business either online or in offline vending trade magazines just to get familiar with what is going on in the industry.

    I always suggest even buying a few e books to get your self instant hands on access to information from experts in the industry. Then figure out the direction that you want to take with your business.

    Are you starting out with pop or soda machines? What about snack machines? Is food or coffee vending an option for you? Or are you just going to start with bulk candy vending?

    All of these things you should explore and think about. When I first started I made a choice to start with pop machines because of the low cost to acquire them and they were a profitable income source.

    Then once I got rolling selling pop I branched out to selling snacks as well. This was a great choice because the profit margins were high and people just simply love to buy and eat chips and chocolate bars.

    My suggestion to people starting out is to stay away form coffee vending and food vending in the beginning because the machines are costly and sales of products in those machines are not as strong as soda and snacks.

    Chris Robertson has been a vending operator for over 10 years and can teach you the in’s and out’s of the vending machine business and most importantly how to get your Vending Machine Business Start Up going in the right direction the first time out.

    OVERVIEW

    For small companies, creating their product’s User Documentation in-house, provides benefits to the company, to (idle) staff, and to the product. This article describes the benefits and some downsides of producing User Documents in-house. Go to sectional titles for more information.

    THREE OPTIONS

    If you have no in-house writing staff you have three options:

    1. No User Document for the product. This is NOT a valid option. Every product needs User Documentation. It completes your product package, and enhances the User’s experience with your product. Here are two examples of non-existent User Documentation:

    * Tomatoes. Most people don’t know that before use, tomatoes should not be refrigerated. Refrigerating tomatoes before use will reduce their flavor and nutrition value.

    * A Manual Can Opener. This can opener clamps on the can, thus the user does not have to squeeze the handles while operating the can opener. It came with no User Documentation, as “everyone could probably figure out how to use it.” This is wrong. After a few uses, the blades become slightly dulled, and the handles are very difficult to clamp and lock.

    The simple tip of turning the knob while squeezing the handles makes the can opener easy to use. That tip could form the basis of a User Manual for the product. The manual should include instructions for care of the can opener. The absurd situation is that this clamp feature was the unique aspect of the product; but the feature becomes unusable because of no User Document.

    How have you felt about products that came without User Documentation? Were you confused about the product and getting the most from it? User Documentation adds to the value of the product. Let’s look at how we can get it created.

    2. Use an outside writing service or consultant. Technical writers may be an excellent choice to create your User Documentation. However, there may be downsides to using them.

    * When documentation changes have to be made, the company has to re-hire the writer. If the writer were unavailable, then you have to wait or search for a new writer. When the new writer gets hired, a new orientation to the company and the project would have to start. Delays, delays, delays.

    * An even more horrible thought is that the outside writer used some fancy piece of software to create the User Document, and you do not own that software. Thus you could not make any changes until you bought and learned that software, or hired an outside writer who uses the same software. (Most technical writers are enamored with a particular piece of esoteric writing software.)

    Using the outside writer will force you to batch your documentation changes, making the literature out of date. (How many times have you seen product documentation that does not match the product? This happens because the company was waiting for the next major upgrade to update the User Documentation.)

    3. Using idle employees in your company to create the User Documentation. The remainder of this article will focus on this option.

    STAFFING BENEFITS

    In most organizations, there is some staff down-time. By assigning these staff to create User Documents you benefit from effective use of this down-time, and the employees benefit from experience in a new field. Refer to sectional titles for more information.

    These staffing benefits include:

    * Use staff who may be idle between projects
    * Your staff know the company’s culture and their fellow staff
    * Your staff use existing company-wide writing tools (your word processor)
    * No time needed to get oriented with the physical aspects of the job
    * You have created a new resource within company

    BENEFITS TO YOUR USER DOCUMENTS

    If you have in-house writers (even if they are not formally trained as “technical writers”) you can just say “Sue, could you or Tom update the document where the sign-in window is presented.” Much faster and more flexible then having to go to an outside source. Sue and Tom have ownership of the document, and would work to improve it. They would use software resources available in your organization.

    The benefits of in-house writers to your User Documents include:

    * You can make corrections as you find the errors.
    * You are able to update your User Document when you update your product.
    * Better control of timing and resources
    * No fear in dealing with the User Document in electronic form. From your word processor or add-ins, you can publish your User Document as a portable data format (.pdf) file, or as HTML for display on the Internet.

    DOWNSIDES OF IN-HOUSE WRITING

    The primary downsides of in-house User Document creation are the attitude and emotions of your newly-appointed writer. These include:

    * Fear (”I don’t know how to write”)
    * Anger (”Why me? This is unfair”)
    * Uncertainty (”I don’t know what to write”)
    * Isolation (”I’ve been cast into this writing thing”)

    You can reduce these negative emotions if you encourage and support your New Writer.

    SUPPORT YOUR NEW WRITERS

    It is unfair to assign a non-writer to create a User Document without supporting him/her. You have to support your writer with:

    * Training;
    * Access to the development and marketing teams for product information;
    * Use of the development team to evaluate their writing (small chunks);
    * Access to the product, industry literature, and marketing materials;
    * Style manual;
    * Editor — your writing expert;
    * Time to do a good job.

    A Camping Kenya safari means a tented camp with no fence or wall, and is a much better part of an in Kenya safari than sleeping in a lodge. Of course in a camp with no fence the animals you have come to see, do come into the camp especially at night. Close encounters with an elephant browsing three feet from your tent is what a camping Kenya safari is all about. Go to hunting safari for more information.

    As a family our first experience of an in Kenya safari was at the famous Galdessa Camp in Tsavo East. With two small children and apprehensive parents we felt that a fixed camp was going to be about as close to the wilderness as we could cope with, and so in the purest sense of the word it wasn’t a camping Kenya safari, but Galdessa is a camp with no fences or walls. The ‘tents’ were thatched bandas and a great deal more civilized than we expected with electricity, running water, and comfortable beds. Most important of all we were sealed in, zipped up at night with good well fitting mosquito nets.

    On he way to Galdessa, and by the way we had our own family vehicle and driver arranged hrough the Manager at Hemingways. He wisely said that for our first in Kenya Safari it was the best way, because we could stop when we wanted and view as long as we wanted, and how right he was.

    The few vehicles we saw were mainly like mini buses crammed with tourists, which looked no fun at all.

    He aso said that if a luxury african safari was our ideal, then to start at Galdessa would be best, and how right he was again.

    On our six hour drive from Malindi we had already seen several giraffes, elephants, but several hundred yards away, a lioness looking for her cubs, and a whole variety of bambi like creatures, water buffalo, and then very close to Galdessa two very large bull elephants, one of whom we passed at about fifteen yards, and exciting that was too. Refer to hunting safaris for more information.

    We hardly passed a vehicle, and whilst our journey was just before the long rains arrived in April, the weather was clear and warm. The rains howver came a few days later, and even overnight this was seen by a considerable rise in the water level in the river due to rain up country.

    We duly arrived at Galdess for our first night ever on a Kenya safari, nd were led to our banda, being shown on the way, elephant tracks, lion footprints, and hippo prints as well, all on the path inside the camp. We were told in no uncertain terms that on a camping kenya safari site like Galdessa, we were not under any circumstances, even in daylight to leave our banda unless we were with a member of staff, because of the high chance of an encounter with an animal.

    After dark, we had to get into a safari vehicle to go the the dining area, because there was a bull elephant in the camp, and indeed on returning to our banda later by vehicle the bll elephant was browsing outside our back door, an we crept past about 10 feet away to the safety of our tent.

    A visiting hippo in the middle of the night, right next to the tent, and the early morning evidence that a lion had been within touching distance of the tent really made our stay at Galdessa.

    The food at lunch and dinner was spectacularly good, the views of the river from the central lounge/dining hut was excellent, and the surprisingly hot shower in our ten all adde to make the first night of our first in Kenya safari a memorable one.

    Galdessa is a must on any Kenya safari tour, and a definite stop on a luxury african safari. Visit hunting safaris for further information.

    Identity theft – also termed ID theft, identity fraud and ID fraud – describes a type of fraud where a criminal adopts someone else’s identity in order to profit illegally. It is one of the quickest growing forms of fraud in a lof of developed countries.

    In the UK identity theft is increasing at the rate of 500% every year and, according to Which Magazine, 25% of the population have either suffered from identity theft or know someone who has.

    In America, a report issued by the Better Business Bureau reported that, in 2004, over 9 million Americans became victims of identity fraud with the total sum stolen being $52.6 billion.

    With statistics like this, it’s no surprise that there is a certain level of concern on the subject of computer and internet security. After all, the internet is primarily a mechanism for transferring data and the possibility that some of the information transferred may be more than intended is never far from many web user’s minds.

    It’s easy to imagine criminal masterminds around the globe using the web to hack into PCs in order to gain access to data with which to advance their fiendishly evil plans. However, as shown in the report, the facts of the matter are a little more basic and the internet, far from making you more at risk to identity fraud, can help to significantly minimise the damage if you do fall victim this type of fraud.

    Based upon the Better Business Bureau’s findings the most common methods by which criminals gain access to data used for identity theft fraud are as noted below:

    • Information stolen from garbage. 2.6%
    • Stolen paper mail or fraudulent change of address. 8.0%
    • Accessed as part of a transaction. 12.9%*
    • Information accessed by corrupt employee. 8.7%
    • Computer spyware. 5.2%
    • Accessed by friend, acquaintance or relative. 11.4%
    • Don\’t know, refused, no answer. 11.1%
    • Emails sent by criminals posing as legitimate business. 1.7%
    • Lost or stolen wallet, chequebook or credit card. 28.8%
    • Obtained some other way. 7.4%
    • Computer viruses and/or hackers. 2.2%

    * 12.9% due to transactions – 10.4% offline transactions, 2.5% online transactions.

    In total, when the instances where data was accessed during transactions are split into online and offline transactions, only 11.6% of the information used to carry out identity theft fraud was obtained from computers.

    Of this more than 50% was obtained by the use ofspyware, viruses or hacking – the risk of which can be ensuring that this is kept up to date.

    Not only did the survey reveal that the web was not a major source of illegally obtained personal informationmonitored their credit records via the web, ATM machines or other real time methods suffered financial losses which were, on average, eight times lower relative to those of victims who used old fashioned paper statements to review their records. This very significant reduction was attributed to the quick discovery of the fraud due to “real time” monitoring.

    Of course, that’s not to say that you shouldn’t exercise great care when using the internet or take care to protect the personal data which you might have stored on your computer. However, as long as you install suitable virus, firewall and spyware security, and keep this continually updated, the should be more of a help than a hindrance when it comes to escaping identity crime.

    Think of the retail clothing sector where there are at least four times per year, aligning roughly with each of our four seasons. Their end of season sales provides excellent opportunity to promote their store and the sale. They draw new and returning clients. Some of those customers who go to the store will buy the sale items, some also buy new items or maybe nothing. But they saw the notice, visited the store, saw what was on offer and took note. The chances of them returning are greater than if they hadn’t gotten the sale notice.

      While the media is reporting a downturn in sales on the UK property market, some sellers may be worried that their home will sit on the market for months without a sniff of interest. However, there are certain ways to make your property standout against the rest, helping you buck the trend of apparent downturn in sales countrywide. While it is difficult to keep a house in this state, especially if it is a family home, it will help your property to sell quickly. In addition, it is important to get as much natural light into the home as possible, take back those curtains and trim any bushes obstructing the light; light and airy interiors are some of the most powerful lures for buyers.

      In the current economic climate there are several debates and discussions on the internet on ways to save costs in business. If you have a place of work or an office which is costing you more than it should, then consider taking your office online.

      In terms of sharpening the competitive edge your business has to have in this difficult market, the value of a virtual receptionist is priceless. This service also keeps your costs down, because by outsourcing services you aren’t required to commit to employing a member of staff.

      Here are a few essential things to consider:

      An employee requires by law - time off, sick pay, holiday pay and other employee benefits or perks. These are not required with a virtual service. Your virtual receptionist will work only the times and hours you need. Say for example you are paying your PA or receptionist to be in your office to take your calls. Most of the time she will be in the office between 9am and 5pm, and how much of that time will she really be on the phone answering your client calls? Unless you operate a call centre, I would guess no more than a few hours. With coffee and lunch breaks - can you really afford to maintain this overhead when there is a far better solution?

      What happens when your receptionist leaves for a while or goes on vacation? Would you need to get an agency worker in to cover those hours? Or would you need to do this yourself? Wouldn’t it be much simpler to utilise a dedicated professional receptionist service which answers your calls for you, one that learns about your business and your customers, and best of all, one that meets your every request?

      So, are you convinced yet? What if I also told you that your virtual receptionist could do all sorts of other things for you too? Answering calls is one thing, but what if your receptionist could make your travel arrangements, book your doctor’s appointment, buy your mums birthday present and have it delivered, or even do your personal shopping online. Virtual Assistants have the ability to revolutionise your business. Let’s summarise the benefits of this change:

      1. You can save money by only paying for the time which is worked, and also by not having to pay a set salary - regardless of whether you’re busy or not.

      2. You can save a lot of hassle. The reliability of a virtual service means that your office is always open, and you don’t have to miss important calls if your receptionist has called in sick.

      And finally…

      3. Time! You can save so much time by outsourcing essential tasks to your virtual assistant. The best thing about this opportunity is that you can make this change right now - hiring a virtual receptionist is as easy as sending an email. So, what are you waiting for?
